OutBound Training

(Adventure Training)

What is OBT?

  • Traditional approach is to conduct training programme in a close classroom situation for 6 to 8 hours.
  • OBT is an effective option to provide or create a learning environment outside the classroom (usually in natural surroundings), wherein participants learn while performing certain interactive exercises and carrying out certain adventurous activities.
  • Focus of OBT is on experiential learning. It ensures learning for all the participants.

Why OBT?

  • “Globalisation – Competition – Rapid Change – New Technologies – Survival of the fittest.” These are the present challenges to our organisations. Any growth oriented and dynamic organisation wanting to succeed in this situation needs highly effective, competent, proactive and innovative managers.
  • Research done on Indian managers reveals that, Scope for Self Development is one of the top 6 factors, which motivates managers.
  • Learning through OBT (adventure) provides the scope for selfdevelopment that prepares the managers and executives for the present-day challenges and also motivates them to act upon.
  • Traditional classroom training has certain limitations in imparting training in the area of various life-skills (like developing positive attitude, building team or providing leadership). OBT by its inherent approach of “Learning while living” transcends these limitations.

What are the distinct dimensions of OBT?

Any OBT has following major distinct dimensions, which result into a very receptive & conducive learning environment.

(1) Informal Environment
(2) Active & Enthusiastic Involvement
(3) More Time & Flexibility of Schedule
(4) Possibility & Feasibility of Interaction
(5) Relaxed & Receptive State of Mind, most of the time

Details of OBT dimensions:

  • Informal Environment supports natural curiosity, which results into inquisitiveness, which is very vital for learning.
  • Active & Enthusiastic Involvement asks for use of almost all senses (to
see, listen, touch, smell & taste), which ensures optimum learning.
  • More Time & Flexibility of Schedule provides scope for flexibility in carrying out exercises/activities. It becomes easier to make spontaneous changes and adaptations.
  • Possibility & Feasibility of Interaction results into sharing of experiential learning. Sharing different viewpoints about any idea reinforces the critical thinking and hence learning. It provides opportunities to share quality time as a human being, to ventilate suppressed emotions and to ease out the conflicts. Collectively it results into strong bond of relations.
  • Relaxed & Receptive State of Mind enhances capacity to learn (relate, analyse, compare, evaluate, judge and act upon) which is the most required dimension for an effective learning.

For Whom?

  • For the Executives, Managers, Supervisors in any functional area of Management, who are physically fit.
  • For Marketing/Sales People, it is very vital, as it results into an enhanced attitude of “I can” and the strong team.
  • No prior physical or any sort of training required.

Which are the major activities involved?

  • Depends on the objectives (enhancing an attitude, team building etc.), group strength, time available and season, activities can be designed and carried out.
  • Some of the important activities are listed below to get an idea:

1. Rock-Climbing (Developing an attitude of “I Can”)
2. Rappelling (Overcoming the fear of failure)
3. Trekking / Hiking in mountains/forests (Stepping into unknown, leadership & team building)
4. Night-camping / trekking (Facing the challenges)
5. Tent-pitching (Leading & Team-building)

Experiential Learning.

Learning from OBT

Learning – a concept

  • Learning is a “conscious effort”.
Daily we do lot many things and pass through experiences.
But when we do not put our conscious efforts to what we do and what we experience, we do not learn from them.
  • Conscious Effort of learning means “focussed attention” to “learning” while “doing” anything.
  • What about enjoying experiences?
    Enjoyment is nothing but “Feeling”.
Yes, we can always enjoy those “doings” without learning! Because “Feeling” is also like “Doing” and “Thinking”.

Learning from OBT

  • As a chief coach, I will clarify to the participants, in the beginning itself that “I am not going to tell you what is going to happen”.
The reason: I wanted them to learn the dimension of “Change” all the time and “learning through change”.
  • There will be some activities appearing extremely difficult. It will be the intentional “Problem Situation”. Participants will solve it individually or collectively. They will learn thus Problem Solving & Leading. [They will realise that there is nothing like problem. It is all situations. We transit from one to another situation. We call the situation as problem because we never expected that. Once we learn this, we stop complaining and start working on the situation as well as on transition process. Everything cannot be as expected. Therefore many activities in this OBT will be unexpected.]
  • In Team Development process, there are stages of Confusion, Conflict, Control, Consensus, Co-operation & Commitment. Through various
exercises, participants will experience these stages and ultimately they will form a strong team.
  • After some exercises & activities, there will be a “sharing of learning” exercise, which is the most important exercise. Appearing very simple,
but very powerful for learning, introspection, reinforcement & expression. Invariably participants will experience their “barriers and
    stoppers” themselves.
  • In OBT, every moment they will be busy! Even in rest! This busy-ness is learning Busy-ness. They will learn that Busy-ness in learning is real
    Business, rest are the results!
  • It has been observed that through adventurous activities like Trekking,
Rock-climbing etc. participants reveals the relative emphasis on handwork, head-work and heart-work in various performances, they learn to use all the three for overall excellence.
  • This results into and synchronisation of Actions-Thoughts-Emotions. It also results in to broader outlook and thus improves perception. Increase of self-confidence, decrease in the fear of failure, increase into enthusiasm to step into unknown, surfacing up of leadership qualities, increase into interpersonal harmony and courage to take bold decisions and development of group as a strong team are some of the obvious results.
  • Entire OBT will be a learning experience. Learning will not be limited to only pre-set activities & pre-set exercises. There will be also lot of spontaneous activities and exercises.
  • Participants will relate themselves to any activity or exercise in a variety of ways. They will give it empowering or dis-empowering meaning. They will then also learn how to give empowering meaning. See Annexure 1 for a sharing exercise on it.
  • On the beginning itself, some participants will be assigned certain duties of co-ordinating, facilitating, communicating etc. They will have
    additional learning!
  • Programme may contain dimensions to satisfy the desires of relaxation, shopping and sightseeing. The entire programme will be designed in the close consultation with you in order to address the specific needs, in advance.
